A Woman in Blood

One evening when I left office and passed by a wet market, I noticed a woman in ragged was sitting at a road block of a sidewalk. The very thing that I saw was the blood on her leg. Her poker face showed no clue on her situation. Hawkers were at her sides, yelling for today’s best buy. Dozens of people walked by, without giving her even a glance. She looked like a lifeless statue in the scene, cold and isolated. As I walked closer to her, questions flushed into my mind.

An elderly taking a nap at a road block near a wet market
“Should I go and ask her?”
“Is she seriously hurt?”
“Should I call the police?”
“Is she in mental instability?”
“Will she attack me?”

When questions were still ruffling up inside me, I had already passed by her, a parable then flashed in. A man was left half dead on a road by robbers. Priest and Minister merely walked by and ignored him. Then a man who was nobody in their eyes came to help. This helpful man, as Jesus said, was a neighbor. We should love and give a hand to those in need. Then I turned back and asked the woman.

“Are you hurt?”
“What?” She puzzled.
“You are bleeding.” I pointed to her leg.
She opened up with her hands, and a plastic bag with a freshly killed fish that had leaked the blood!
“I am sorry.  I just want to see if you are fine.”

I was embarrassed since the woman’s poker face remained. Nevertheless, I am happy that I did ask. Love your neighbor, not because of people’s compliments, but because we are human.

A Healing Miracle - Believe it or not

Do you believe in miracle?  Have you ever experienced one? I did.  Believe it or not, without medical intervention, I have recovered from a prolonged illness.

In 1996, I was diagnosed of hyperthyroidism and began medication.  Then in the following ten years, I had taken three courses of drug treatment for it relapsed again and again.  My physician strongly recommended me to try radioactive iodine treatment since the drug I took might have side effects. She added that my thyroid problem was a life-long bearing and needed a once for all treatment.  I felt uncomfortable with the advice, I did not know why, and I prayed to my God, Jesus.

On the day to take the radioactive iodine, I needed a blood test first.  While waiting for my blood test result, I prayed in my heart again. My prayer was the physician turned down my treatment.  Then a voice came to me, “What if the physician said you are good for treatment? Will you follow the physician’s decision or yours?  Do you rely on somebody’s decision? What is your faith?  Do you dare to leap your faith and make your own choice?”  I was struggling.  Was it just my thought or illusion? What should I say to the physician?  Then my name was called to see a senior physician.

“Alright, your blood test is good for radioactive iodine treatment.  Please sign here and go to room number….” said the senior physician.
“I am sorry, doctor.  I have to decline the treatment.” My voice was trembling, not sure if I leap into faith or fall into a trap.
“Why?  It is a common treatment for thyroid and rather safe.”  The doctor and his assistant stared at me.
“I just do not have confidence in it.”
“Hmm well, it is your own choice and you have to take full responsibility on yourself.  I will not follow up your case anymore.”
“I understand.”
I whispered to God in my heart, “Lord, I can only rely on you now.  I believe in you.”
Since then in 2006; I stopped taking any drug or treatment for thyroid.  It has been almost nine years now and my thyroid problem never relapses.

I consider it as a healing miracle.  What do you think?  Do you think if it is possible that God will listen and speak to people? Please comment.

Starting from January, over 350 adults have been admitted to intensive care unit because of seasonal influenza.   Over 250 among the cases are killed; flu death toll in last year is 149.  The deadly flu is caused by Influenza A (H3N2) which is a mutated variant virus newly found in human.  Vaccine is only expected available until April.  The elderly, children and immunocompromised patients bear the brunt.  Meanwhile, personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness should help prevent the further widespread of the disease.  For Christians, let us pray for the protection of our city and the frontline health staff.

Overcome DEPRESSION – a true story

Depression is increasingly common in urban life.  You may hear now and then a friend suffers from it.  Yesterday I chatted with an online friend Grace.  She is originally from Hong Kong but immigrated to the States for years.  When I knew she once suffered from depression, I immediately asked for permission to share her story.  I hope it may give us ideas what to do when things happen.

Starting life in a new country was not easy, especially when Grace lost her job.  She said, “I have no status, no money, and no income of all the family, as well as no many friends.  At that time I have depression and need to see the psychiatrist and took the anti-depression medication for half year. This is the most difficult time in a foreign country of which Grace replied.  Later she added, “The church helps me a lot.  The pastor visited us every Monday and the other friends also gave me a hand. Almost last half year, then I found a job and the status was stable. Finally everything was getting better and better.  Luckily, my son is a very good boy.  He delivered newspaper for the family economy.  When my son was still in college, he did a lot of job for his tuition fee.”

Grace is now fully recovered from her depression.  She believes all things work together for good according to God’s will.  Grace is living happily with her family in Boston.

Certainly life has ups and downs.  In Grace case, I learn that when depression comes, we need to

  • Seek assistance.  Do not lurk in shadow.  Doctor, family, church, pastor and friends, they can help you out in different dimension.

  • Keep in faith.  You can be recovered.  We do not know why things happen but we look for solution.  Turn to Jesus.  He is almighty and cares about you.
